How you distribute your Skill and Stat Attribute points are a huge part of your Build in Diablo 2, so, you may want to reset these points to make changes to your character (either for leveling purposes, or if you want to try a different Build) — not only is this process a bit ambiguous in Diablo 2, but it’s also a bit limited, and you might want to know your options before you decide when you want to make changes.
How to Reset Skills & Stats
There are two methods for resetting your skills in the game, plus a command line option for offline play that we will also cover in this guide.
The methods are:
- A free reset from Akara per each game difficulty
- Grinding out materials for a Token of Absolution
- Command line for Unlimited Respecs in Offline Play
In reality, what this means is, if you are a casual player of the game and don’t want to mess with the launcher settings, your most accessible option will be Akara. If you do not plan on progressing through more difficulties (Nightmare and Hell), that will be your only and one opportunity to reset your skills. Use it wisely.
However, the good news is, if you are in offline play, there is a very simple setting to enable unlimited free respecs, which can take a lot of pressure off of the shoulders of a casual player.
Token of Absolution can be crafted as many times as you would like, but it requires material grind on highest game difficulty. However, if you are on Hell and playing the intended endgame, you are already grinding the bosses anyway. So, if you are planning on sticking with the game for a while, you could get as many resets as you need.
Now, let’s go over the steps for each method.
Akara (Den of Evil Quest Reward)
- Complete the quest Den of Evil in Act I, given to you by Akara.
- Once you complete this quest, you can speak to her again, and there will be an option to “reset stat/skill points”.
- This can only be done once per difficulty level (Normal, Nightmare, and Hell).
- This means this method can only be used a total of 3 times per character.
Craft a Token of Absolution
In the vanilla version, this method required the Lord of Destruction expansion, but the expansion comes included in Diablo 2: Resurrected.
- You can create a Token of Absolution in the Horadric Cube using the following Materials:
- Twisted Essence of Suffering (dropped by Andariel and Duriel)
- Charged Essence of Hatred (dropped by Mephisto)
- Burning Essence of Terror (dropped by Diablo)
- Festering Essence of Destruction (dropped by Baal)
- Once it’s created, you can use the item to reset all of your Skill and Attribute points.
- There is no limit to how many times this can be done.
- However, each of the ingredients are a rare drop from each of the Act Bosses, making this method very time-consuming.
Command Line for Unlimited Respecs
Don’t let the title of this section discourage you: this method is pretty simple; no risky editing of weird game files required.
- Open the Diablo II Resurrected page in the Battle.Net launcher.
- Click on the cogwheel next to the Play button.
- Select “Game Settings”.
- Under the Install Location is “Additional command line arguments” — check in that box.
- In the field below type in “-enablerespec” (without quotation marks).
- Click “Done”.
Once that’s added you’ve enabled being able to reset skills and stats, but in order to actually do it in game you need to:
- Be logged in to the character in question.
- Press C to open the Character Window.
- Hold down Alt and click one of the red “+” buttons to reset all skills & stats.
That’s it! Now you should be able to reset skills from your character’s stat page without any limitations.
